This big festivity, declared as being of International Tourist Interest, has roots in ancient celebrations related to the summer solstice. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits burning old and useless objects & welcome the summer.

 

The main characters of the festival are gigantic figures made of wood and cardboard that will burn the Night of San Juan on 24th June.

 

Alicante starts the summer officially when the Hogueras de San Juan festivities take place, and we will be there for a 1 night stay to see the burning of these amazing characters and say “hello” to the summer!!!
